Our Millbrook and District Lions Club is once again hosting their PetValu Walk for Dog Guides in downtown Millbrook.  The event takes place on Sunday, May 26, and is one of approximately 300 events in communities across the country, raising funds to train Dog Guides for Canadians with disabilities.  Last year, the 29 registered walkers in Millbrook raised over $5,000, surpassing the amount raised in Peterborough, and contributing to the more than $1.2 million dollars raised for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.  Each Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000.00 to train and is matched with a qualified applicant at no cost.  All of the funds raised in this event go directly toward raising, training and providing Dog Guides to Canadians.   The dogs serve Canadians suffering from a number of medical challenges, including visual and hearing impairment, seizures, autism, diabetes, and provide dogs to professional agencies dealing to help individuals in traumatic situations, such as crime victims and witnesses.

Participants can register any time on-line, at www.walkfordogguides.com, as an individual walker, as a team member or as a business.

Walkers will also be able to register on the day of the event at the Mason’s Lodge on King Street between 9:30 and 10 am.  This year, there are two walking routes available; one through the village and a second one travelling through a portion of the Millbrook Valley Trails.  The Walk should wrap up by 1 pm, giving walkers and spectators an opportunity to enjoy downtown shopping and refreshment after or during the event.

This is a fun event for all ages.  If you are unable to participate in the walk, you can support the walkers by stopping by the downtown, where you can pick up lunch at the Lion’s food truck and peruse the shops, and maybe even some sidewalk sales.   For more information on Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides or to register for the event, go to www.dogguides.com.
