All too soon…?

In the fields the goldenrod is already past its prime; the purple of the New England Asters is no longer as glowing; and the leaves of the ash trees are definitely beginning to colour. The oppressive heat of the first week of school is now definitely past. Nature and our calendar are both telling us that summer is over.

My first reaction is, “Ah, all too soon!” But my second , following quickly on the first, is one of eager anticipation. How wonderful to be seeing these changes that mark the passage of one season into the next.

When asked what season is my favourite, I am always definite (but slightly shy to state) that fall is my favourite. As an inveterate gardener, one would think that spring or summer would have to be my preferred season. But not so. This mellow season of mists and slanting sunlight somehow has captured my heart.

Apples trees in my garden, in orchards, and along the sides of roads are sporting colourful harvests of tantalizing fruit. One tree in my yard is ready to be picked, but I’m hesitating–the red fruit look so beautiful on the tree…
