Trout Unlimited Tree Giveaway

A polite queue formed beside the bridge at the Mill Pond on Friday evening as members of the Millbrook Trout Unlimited organization handed out seedlings to eager residents.

There were four species available: Willow, Dogwood, Eastern white Cedar and Sugar Maple.  The four hundred saplings were purchased from Otonabee Conservation as part of their Tree Seedling Sales program.  Planting instructions were provided, and recipients were encouraged to plant willow and dogwood in wet areas and along riverbanks to prevent erosion.  Eastern white cedar tolerate both wet and dry conditions while sugar maples prefer it on the dry side.

Funds to purchase the seedlings were donated by Bobcaygeon Brewery, which directed $.25 from the sale of every can of their Baxter Creek Blond Ale towards the Millbrook Trout Unlimited Chapter’s tree planting initiative.  Planting along waterways promotes biodiversity and helps cool the creek, creating a healthier ecosystem.  Thanks, everyone!
