Switching it up in February – Library Events – February 2023

While it sounds like a cliché, to better meet the needs of our patrons, we have made some changes to our programming schedule. Children’s Storytime at the Bruce Johnston Branch has moved to Tuesdays at 10am. This is followed by an Adult Storytime at 10:45am, a partnership with Christian Horizons. If you know someone who has a developmental or physical disability who would be interested in participating in our Adult Storytime, please let Library staff know or e-mail Courtney at tutor@cmlibraries.ca.

We have a variety of events happening in February. The month starts off with a PA Day activity on Friday, February 3rd@ 11am. Projected on the big screen in the Millbrook Branch, we will be having an interactive Virtual Tour of the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre in Peterborough. Through the wonders of technology, the OTCC staff will be introducing us to some of the turtle patients, how veterinarians treat the injured turtles, and give us information about the eight species of turtles that are currently at risk.

Later in the month join us for a Valentine’s Day “Cookie Walk” fundraiser (Tuesday, Feb. 14th during open hours – both branches) Just a reminder, movie night has changed to the second Tuesday of the month – which will be February 14th. We will be showing “Amsterdam” starring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. Treats and a movie at the Millbrook Branch – an affordable Valentine’s date night?

February also see the launch of our new Family Storytime (Tuesday, Feb. 21st @5pm – Bruce Johnston Branch).

Chess anyone? Joe Weissman is helping us start a Chess group at the Millbrook Branch. Stop by from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Tuesdays to play a game with Joe!

The CM Libraries is a Homeschool Friendly Library! We would like to offer programs and activities for those who are homeschooling, for example, we could provide longer loan times, a Storytime during the day for specific ages, or we could have STEM/STEAM/Makerspace activities on a scheduled day. Drop by and chat with library staff to discuss how we can support your homeschool journey

We are looking to add more Book Clubs to our schedule. We have a Book Club at the Millbrook Branch, but we would like to have one at the Bruce Johnston Branch as well. A survey is on our website to figure out the best time of day. We are also gauging interest in a Tween/Teen Book Club! If you know someone between the ages of 9 to 17 who would be interested, please let us know! If books aren’t your thing, we are exploring other areas that the Tweens/Teens might be interested in such as playing video games.

After having provided Twiddle Cuffs to Community Care and kitten blankets for the Humane Society, our Community Threads group is looking for our next project. We are looking for suggestions of other organizations that could benefit from knit and crochet products.

We are launching our “Library of Things” which includes our Spice Library. The Spice Library is a work in progress, we welcome any donations and will continue to find new and interesting spices to add to our collection. Other “Things” in the “Library of Things” are an Instant Pot, Crock pot, cake pans, carbon dioxide monitors, soprano recorders and a breadmaker. This is a growing collection; we will only be limited by our imaginations and space available to store these non-traditional items.

Please check the newsletter for more details about all our programs and activities!
