Spring’s Arrival Comes with the Extension of our Seniors Community Grant

Library Events – April 2024

We have great news! We are extending our Seniors Community Grant until June!

We are excited to be able to continue to host more workshops so that participants can come together to share their stories. We have a few more workshop ideas, so keep an eye on our social media pages and newsletter in the coming weeks and months.

Jim Chaplin will be coming back to the Millbrook Branch on Wednesday, April 17th from 1:00-3:00pm to showcase his travels to Newfoundland. Please bring a contribution to the Millbrook Food Share, either financial or a non-perishable food item. We will also be welcoming back Jan Stirling-Twist to the Millbrook Branch on Wednesday, May 8th from 1:00-3:00pm. Stay tuned for more information!

We continue to have Junior Mathematicians on Wednesdays at 11:15am at our Millbrook Branch, which focuses on fun math games and learning. For the month of April, we will be focusing on money: what is it and how do we use it? We have Junior Scientists on Thursdays at 10:15am at our Bruce Johnston Branch, which focuses on fun and interesting science activities/experiments. In April, we will be exploring nature with bird watching, a bird feeder craft, planting seeds, and much more! Lastly, we have Sensory Storytime at 11:15am at our Millbrook Branch. Sensory Storytime offers children the opportunity to move and interact with a variety of materials while the story is being read. While Sensory Storytime is available for preschoolers, it also supports children with autism or sensory processing challenges.

Every second Tuesday of the month, the Millbrook Branch hosts a Toonie Tuesday Movie at 6:30pm. On April 9th, we will be showing the movie “Someone Lives Here,” which deals with the catastrophic increase in homelessness in Toronto during the pandemic. A carpenter takes it upon himself to build, and make accessible, small, life-saving shelters for the unhoused residents of Toronto. Using body temperature for heating, Khaleel’s efforts garnered international media attention, leading Toronto to propose a possible partnership-only to reverse its decision a week later.

Starting in April, we will be having Creativebug Workshops on the second Wednesday of every month. Library staff will select projects that can be found on Creativebug, which is an online learning platform that we offer for free to our patrons. On Wednesday, April 10th at 3:00pm, our first workshop will be on vision boards, taught by Courtney and Liana from Creativebug. Vision boards are a collection of images and words which represent a person’s wishes or goals, intended to serve as inspiration or motivation. Let’s get inspired together!

We have Cookbook Book Club at 1:30pm on the third Saturday of every month at our Bruce Johnston Branch. Every month, participants pick a recipe to make that follows the theme of the month. We ask that you bring a copy of the recipe so that we can discuss the dish and hand out a copy to anyone who is interested in making it at home! On Saturday, April 20th, our theme is anything Canadian! Will you make a recipe that has maple syrup in it or re-create a classic like baked beans?
