These are some of the sounds that the Millbrook South Cavan Public School band makes!

Today, we are writing about the school band. Grade 7 and 8 students have lots of instruments to play this year. The school band is starting to play Christmas music to start the new year with songs like “Jingle Bells”, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” and other great, great, great Christmas songs! Band practices are usually on Tuesday and they practice every single week! The Millbrook Band has instrument groups such as: Drums, Mallets, Saxophone, Trumpet, Flute, Clarinet and Guitar. The band will be performing to the great audience of the students and parents of Millbrook South Cavan Public School at the winter open house. So, come on down to watch the Millbrook South Cavan Public School band to support them!

A Big Thanks to the Millbrook/Cavan Firefighters’ Association

By Newspaper Club Member Lauren Dunlop, Grade 8

Cavan Elementary students would like to give a huge shout out to the Millbrook/Cavan Firefighters’s Association which donated a huge amount of money to our breakfast club program at Millbrook South Cavan and North Cavan Public Schools. We are so glad they could do this for us.  This donation came from the proceeds of the “Touch a Truck” event last month. The Millbrook/Cavan Firefighters’ Association gave MSC a donation of $1000,00 for the Breakfast Club program this has helped MSC so much. The kids at Millbrook are showing up to our table in the morning with huge smiles. So thanks again to the Cavan Firefighters and Millbrook for this donation!

#FemSteamProject

By Sierra Harman, Grade 7

Get out your safety goggles, because I will be talking about the STEAMproject. Thursday, October 10th, the girls of grade 7 and 8 were given an opportunity to learn more about STEAM. Steam stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Some people also just call it, STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Before I went into the auditorium where Roberta Bondar gave her speech, I was set on what I wanted to do. Once I walked out I had a different mindset: I thought I could have a chance at a job with science and technology. Now knowing I have a possibility, I will work my way  toward finding jobs like a lawyer for science and technology, or maybe even a technician. If you look at the percentage of women in STEM jobs, in 2016 women made up to 34% of STEM bachelor’s degree holders and 23% of science and technology workers among Canadians aged 25 to 64. The speakers told us that most young females, if they were asked to draw a scientist, they would draw a male scientist. That’s what most young females think of scientists, they want to change that.

Women should feel empowered to do any job they want, whether that’s a job in STEM or not. Roberta Bondar once said, “To fly in space is to see the reality of earth, alone. The experience changed my life and my attitude towards life itself. I am one of the lucky ones.”

I personally like this quote.  She had an opportunity that changed her perspective and attitude on life. She said “I am one of the lucky ones.”  To me, that means she was lucky she got to live her dream and become an astronaut, but as long as you fight for your dreams and try your hardest you can do it. We decide our future and no one can tell us different.

The Wizard of Oz

By Newspaper Club Members Eva Deyell and Allison Carroll, Gr.7

Close your eyes and tap your heels three times and think to yourself, “There’s no place like home” … Millbrook South Cavan is having a play! It’s The Wizard Of Oz musical! Students in Grades 3 to 5 are trying out at 9:50-10:30 and those in grades 6-8 are trying out at 12:10-12:50. There are 7 main roles in this play: the Tin Man, Lion, the Wicked Witch of the West, the great Wizard of Oz, Gilinda, Scarecrow and of course Dorothy. Since it’s a musical, actors will need to perform a song. Everyone trying out has two choices: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday- two original songs that everyone knows! Both of us are also interested in auditioning. We’ll keep you updated when we know more about the play!
