Are you looking for a way to meet your neighbours and make a contribution to your community? The Lions club is a good place to start.
This paper often includes photos of members of the Millbrook and District Lions Club doing good things for our community. In this edition they are seen donating to Millbrook Foodshare, organizing a bottle drive for the Crawford family and hosting their monthly breakfast. Over the last twelve months, they have donated more than $13,000 to local organizations and individuals. Who are these people and where do these funds come from?
These are a diverse group of your neighbours united by a willingness to help their communities through a world-wide volunteer organization which has operated around the world for more than 100 years. The Millbrook branch is not much younger, having celebrated its 75th anniversary last spring. Lions club members share their time and talents to support people and organizations in their communities and beyond.
Many of their fundraising events involve food. The Lions host monthly breakfasts from September to March, a spaghetti dinner in the fall, and serve up food in their food truck at most community events including Ladies’ Night, public school fairs and the Millbrook Fair and a men’s breakfast program at Centennial Place. They are co-hosts of the Annual Fishing Derby and organize car shows in Millbrook and at Kawartha Downs. They also host special fundraising events for individuals such as the recent bottle Drive on behalf of the Crawford family.
Food is also part of the club’s monthly meetings, where they enjoy dinner catered by one of the local churches followed by a meeting and sometimes a guest speaker. One ingredient in every Lions’ event is fun.
The club currently has 39 active members and are always looking for more. Each member determines their own level of commitment, and given the variety of activities, they can usually find one they want to support with a few hours of willing hands and a smile.
