RPN Beth Steinbeck offers mobile foot therapy services in the area.

After working for more than a decade in long term care settings, Registered Practical Nurse Beth Steinbeck was ready for a change.  Among the residents in her care, foot issues were common, and as the song goes, your ankle bone’s connect to your leg bone… In other words, healthy feet are critical to overall health.

During the past two years, the pandemic has prevented external foot care nurses from delivering their valuable services inside long term care homes.  Beth decided to extend her training to include Advanced Foot Care from foot care expert Ruth Ruttan to fill that void.  A well-respected expert who trains for the College of Nurses and consults for hospitals and long term care homes, Ruttan offers training in skin and nail pathology, diabetes foot care, the treatment of corns, callouses and circulation treatments for diabetics.

For older folks, foot care is not just a matter of esthetics.  Problems such as skin and nail foot injuries, fungal infections and circulation problems related to diabetes are common, and with physical limitations and vision issues, the ability to perform routine foot care becomes more difficult.  Additional training in pallative therapy, Palliation, and Dementia Care, along with her extensive nursing experience with the elderly ensures Beth understands her patients’ physical and emotional needs.

In January, Beth launched an independent foot care service called Heart & Sole Foot Care.  In these short few weeks, she has found many of her customers who have been cooped up in their homes for an extended period, are very eager to talk.  While she is getting an earful, she examines her customers for foot issues related to footwear, injuries and infections, trimming nails, treating fungal infections and recommending appropriate home treatments.

The boost in demand for therapeutic foot care services has been compounded by the retirement of many local foot care nurses.  Beth notes that five have retired in the Peterborough area during the last two years, while several others plan to do so in the near future.  This prompted her to quit her day-job and take control of her schedule by launching her foot care service.

Recognizing the mobility issues of her customer base, Beth provides in-home services, but also has established a connection with Guardian Pharmacy on High Street in Peterborough where she will offer services on a regular basis.

Those looking for some tlc for their feet will be well served by a visit from this foot care expert who provides safe, esthetic care that will provide a holistic assessment of the health of their feet, in the comfort of their homes.  She will even apply nail polish if requested, provided it belongs to the customer.  Some things, like nail polish, she explains, are not good to share.
