Survive the Holidays

For those who are striving for a healthier lifestyle and watching their weight, the Christmas season can sure through a wrench into the best of plans. However, I have learned a few simple tips to enjoy the season without gaining those dreaded holiday pounds.

If you’re given a box of treats, enjoy one or two and share the rest. Take small samples of desserts if you feel the need to have more than one.

If you’re invited to an event that offers an array of finger foods, consider it your meal. It’s better to eat these as a substitute for dinner than in addition to dinner.

Don’t keep the goodies sitting around. Even if you’re the only who is watching weight or calories, nobody really needs to be nibbling on nuts or candies all day. Keep the cookies out of sight and bring them out only when you’re entertaining or on Christmas or New Year’s Day.

Treat yourself to one new activity. Go skating at the local arena, try tobogganing, rent a pair of snowshoes, have a snowball fight with your children, shovel your walk and driveway repeatedly, take your dog for a walk in the deep woods, shovel a neighbour’s driveway, walk around at night and enjoy the lights, or join a caroling group. Whatever you do, don’t let the extra busyness push out exercise.

Blessings on the road to health!
