The library offers more than books, providing a variety of programs for residents of all ages.

March is Women’s History Month. We are acknowledging this important month with book displays and a specially-themed Storytime and Craft on Saturday, March 9th at 11:00am as part of our Indoor Play programming (Millbrook Branch).

We had a busy February with our Seniors Community Grant! We welcomed back Adelle Purdham for a Writer-in-Residence Workshop. We enjoyed a travel presentation from Jim Chaplin – admission was donations to the Millbrook Food Share. We also had a fun demonstration with our new VR headsets; stay tuned for upcoming VR programming! We welcomed Tori Owen to the Millbrook Branch for a Family Epic Workshop which melded memoir writing and music. Lovely music could be heard coming from the Harry Williams Room that afternoon and one of our participants shared a beautiful poem they had written. Tori and Karla are going to work at setting it to music.

In March, we look forward to having two guest speakers as part of our Lunch & Learn series at the Millbrook Branch. On Wednesday, March 6th at 1:00pm, Hermione Revison will be talking about Folk Tales, which are stories that have been handed down for centuries. Hermione has a background in community work, with teaching training, counselling practices, theology, and theatre work. On Wednesday, March 20th at 1:00pm, we will be welcoming Rob Winslow (playwright/actor & founder of 4th Line Theatre) to our Millbrook Branch. Rob will be discussing how he turned local archival and oral history (stories that he’s been told through interviews with area residents) into plays. Lunch will be provided; please pre-register to ensure that we have enough food for everyone.

Our Seniors Community Grant is winding down but not done yet. The focus of this project has been memoir-writing, with the finished product a published book containing the stories from the participants. If you or someone that you know has an interesting story that they would like to contribute to the book, please email Courtney at tutor@cmlibraries.ca.

Join us at the CMLibraries for March Break! On Tuesday, March 12th, stop by the Bruce Johnston Branch and participate in a sensory activity to learn how to make no-cook playdough at 10:15am. We will have a pyjama party at 4:00pm! Come to the Bruce Johnston Branch in your pyjamas and bring anything else that will make you nice and cozy for Storytime. At the Millbrook Branch on Wednesday, March 13th at 10:15am, we will be participating in a science experiment to see what happens when you mix water, vegetable oil, food colouring, and Alka seltzer together. We will also have a drop-in Art Attack from 1:00-3:00pm; library staff will provide a variety of ordinary and not so ordinary items for children to make their very own art creations.

At the Bruce Johnston Branch, we will be making “stovetop” cookies on Thursday, March 14th at 10:15am. We will be focusing on hand hygiene, how to follow a recipe, and how to safely handle ingredients/hot surfaces. We will also be having a drop in Art Attack from 1:00-3:00pm. We are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day a little early: please wear green when you visit the library on Friday, February 15th! At 10:15am, we will be having a St. Patrick’s Day themed Storytime at the Millbrook Branch, with a corresponding craft and activity.
