Letter to the Editor – January 2021

My husband and I came here so we could raise our family in the country.  We are from Scarborough, Ontario.

Alas it was only a matter of time before the city followed us here.  Although they call it progress, some things are better not touched.

I’ve been reading a lot lately about the Highlands of Millbrook and the new Baxter Creek housing coming in for seniors.  Recently I know of at least four apartments in Millbrook that have been renovated and put up for rent.  The rent for all of these apartments is more than $2000 plus utilities, and some of the homes in the Highlands of Millbrook are renting for $2500 plus utilities.  It saddens me to see all of this happening and not one affordable housing, subsidized or not-for-profit unit in the midst of all of this.  There are so many young families out there with young children who would love a place to call their own.  Their budget for living expenses is between $1220 to $1500 means nothing.  No wonder so many end up on the streets, or in broken down apartments, or in shelters.  Some do work or want to find work and still can’t find a place to live.  The government turns a blind eye as do the developers and builders because it’s all about the money they can make.  I would love for my son and his family to live closer.  He works, but sadly can’t find an affordable place to live.  Yes, the city has arrived in Millbrook but so has the high cost of living and the landlords whose drive for profit is preventing young families the chance to improve their living situation.
