Re:         “King Street West Opening Marked by Speeding” – p.10, July 2018

I read with interest – and trepidation – your piece on King Street West finally being completed and the accompanying speeding cars that are increasing in frequency since the street was completed.

The Peterborough Police Service ticketing the number of local residents speeding is disconcerting to say the least.  Residents feeling the need for speeding within 1-2 kms of their home will impact school kids getting on buses, people visiting the Medical Centre and local churches, and seniors crossing the street.  In short, it will affect the quality of life here in the village.

This speeding will result in someone getting injured, or worse, killed – because drivers are getting too comfortable driving fast on King St. W. (and East for that matter).  Why?

Because they feel safe doing so and can get away with it.

So what can be done?  Education?  Enforcement?  Traffic-calming measures?   There is a basket of options available to pursue, if the municipal and county leaders are willing to listen and engage the residents. And now is the critical time, with Phase 1 of the new subdivision being built.  And traffic-calming measures that go beyond the digital speed monitor being proposed.

The residents missed a golden opportunity to engage the Township, County and Consultants during the public meetings over 2 years ago, when traffic-calming should not only have been on the table for discussion, but action agreed to by the residents to purse a course that can make their village a safer place to live. That opportunity has never gone away.  It is not too late to engage the residents here – and perhaps save a life.
