New Potter from Parry Sound Opens Her Shop in Bethany

By Melodie Seto

After three years of settling down in Bethany, Jodie Hames has officially reopened her business – Clayworks Pottery. Her work features one-of-a-kind stoneware clay creations that vary from unique multi-purpose items to stand-alone decorative pieces for gardens and homes.

Clayworks Pottery first opened in 1994 by the Georgian Bay. The business was quite successful there as her work was well admired by local cottage owners. Jodie has spent most of her years in Parry Sound. She started out by studying Fine Arts in Barrie and worked with a potter for a summer, whicheventually led her to take up the craft on her own. She was deeply inspired by the nature and scenery in her area of which is portrayed in her art through the use of blue, green, and earthy hued glazes and paint, along with the added presence of pine trees, dragonflies, birds, frogs, and toads. These Georgian Bay-inspired themes still characterize much of her work today; however, with the invigorating fields, forests, and rolling hills of the Bethany area, Jodie is finding some new influences to spark her creativity. In the near future, she hopes to start creating pieces that reflect the beautiful local scenes of this area…

While Clayworks Pottery is still in its early stages after relocating, Jodie’s work can be viewed at her studio shop by appointment or online at www.clayworkspottery.ca.
