New School Year Brings Changes at Millbrook South Cavan Public School

by Newspaperclub member Mariza S.

This school year, our wonderful school, Millbrook South Cavan Public School, has gone through many changes, some of them more major than others. Some of these changes are more insignificant, and some have an effect on our community as a whole. These changes have been made by the school staff, and who believe that they will be beneficial to the community.

One of the biggest changes this year is the way that we sign out to go downtown at second break. This affects only the intermediate grades, but nevertheless, it is still quite an impactful change. Before, we would just write our name on a sign-out board in each classroom. Now, we have a sheet that is taken down to the office daily. We have to just write our name, class, and date on a sign out sheet. This isn’t that much of a change, but some classes find it hard to adjust to. It’s just remembering to sign out, that’s what we found somewhat challenging. But, as time went on, we have adjusted to this change. It is now a regular thing for the students at our school. Nevertheless, our school is still energetic and ready to learn.

There are some more minor changes at our school as well. Some of these may not be a big deal, but they are beneficial for the most part. Another thing is that now every morning on the announcements, we acknowledge that our school is on the territory of the Mississauga’s First Nations. We do this every single morning, at the beginning of the announcements. We feel that this is a respectful way to thank them again. One change that it somewhat out of our control is the fact that milk is only delivered three days a week, instead of five. Because of our school’s rising population, we have had to make this cut due to the lack of fridge space. We haven’t run into this problem before, but more and more students like milk orders. Another one of our most prominent issues is the amount of parents/guardians that drop off students in the morning. Due again to the growing population of our school, the parking lot has become congested in the mornings. To solve this problem, we came up with a system called “Kiss n’ Ride”. Although some parents/guardians may not think that it’s fair, it is the most efficient way to avoid congestion in the parking lot. The school has also assigned intermediate students and staff to act as a safety patrol to make sure that any children walking through the parking lot are safe from oncoming cars.

One of our more impactful changes that the staff has made affects our ‘Me to We’ club. Teachers Ms.Monti and Ms.Belk who run Me to We in our school have decided that instead of having a student president and vice present, the club has two or three class representatives. These students have been chosen through an anonymous class vote, after the candidates made a speech and help organize fundraisers, contribute ideas, and more. So far, it has proved to be more beneficial to the club as it has a bigger group of student leaders, leading to more great ideas that can help improve our community.

The last change that will be mentioned in this article is about the breakfast program. This is kind of a nice little change, and everyone appreciates it. The breakfast program now gets delivered to each class, instead of going to the front foyer before school starts. In the morning, the food comes in a bag, and that is our new system.

These are a few of our school’s changes that have helped shaped our community for the better. We have been very lucky to even have the privilege to do most of these activities, and we are extremely grateful for it.

by Newspaper club member Ava R.

Do you like to enjoy a glass of wine in favor of the Christmas spirit? Well the LCBO will be spreading their thoughts on appropriate use of alcohol while driving. MSC as a school is taking part in the decorating of paper bags that provides a message to remind people to drink responsibly and definitely not in the car to ensure everyone is safe throughout the Christmas holiday in Millbrook.
