Community Euchre Draws Casual as well as Dedicated Players

On Wednesday afternoons, the Millbrook Legion hosts Bid Euchre games which are enjoyed by many seniors.

Each week, more than 40 players show up to share cards, conversation and some friendly competition.  While some players are local, many participants are dedicated card players, coming from Peterborough, Port Hope and beyond.  They travel around the area, finding euchre games in Legion, Lions’ and church halls and Community centres in Pontypool, Hiawatha, Peterborough and one of the most popular spot on the schedule is the Lions’ Hall at Orange Corners.  Ranging in admission from $5 to $12, some hosts offer refreshments, others a potluck, but all offer an opportunity to flex your mental muscles and have some fun.

The game itself has been around since the early 1800’s and while it requires a certain level of mental alertness, it is straight forward enough to allow plenty of social interaction. The format in Millbrook ensures that there is no serious rivalry, as all partners change after each match.  It’s a great way to meet people and have some fun.

Some of these players are very dedicated.  One of them in Millbrook last week was from Peterborough and proudly announced that this was her eighth consecutive day playing.

Whether you’re a casual card player or a serious expert, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and exercise your brain and meet some new people through euchre.  In Millbrook you can drop in to try your hand at 1pm on Monday afternoons at St. Thomas Anglican Church Hall or on Wednesday afternoon at the Legion.   It’s a great antidote for the winter blues.
