Cavan Monaghan is the only municipality in the County that collects polystyrene at its local transfer station, and has been since 2012. The County has paid the cost as it does for individuals who bring polystyrene for recycling to the Pido Road disposal site.
The County is now proposing to charge an estimated $1,500 to the township for this service.
The township has stated to the County that this change would be a step backwards, with the material potentially going directly into landfill instead, and has asked the County to reconsider.
