Young Pirates Invade the Legion During March Break

Another season of theatrics wrapped up during March break as Funfolk Theatricals demonstrated  their poise and creativity in four performances of the original play entitled The Horrible, Terrible Pirate King.  The cast of 24 aged five to fourteen embraced the story, assuming characters both noble and not, gamely joining in song when required.  Whether the actors arrived with theatrical vision and poise or acquired it as the production unfolded, all made their stage entrances with smiles (where appropriate) and presence.  Doing so required meeting a multitude of challenges: delivering timely punchlines; holding the appropriate pose and expression of their character; projecting their voices and maintaining their composure throughout the play.

An eager audience packed the Millbrook Legion and was treated to a story with heroes, villains and some pet impersonators telling a story with an underlying theme reminding us that things are not always as they seem.   This upbeat story written and directed by author Shan McFadden of Cavan provided opportunities for experienced participants to show their skills and the uninitiated and initially intimidated ones to spread their wings.  Costumes were particularly colourful and creative this year as participants embraced the pirate theme.

Adult volunteers also contributed to the performance, putting together props, organizing publicity and rehearsals.  The productions demonstrates the depth of creative talent that a youth theatrical group can draw and gives young people the opportunity to develop a confidence and stage presence that will serve them well for many years to come.

This year, founder Jackie Franco and her husband David enjoyed the program from seats in the audience instead of from the wings, having passed the baton to new leadership last season.    Piano accompaniment traditionally provided by David Franco was replaced this year with excerpts from the soundtrack of a Pirates of the Caribbean film, providing an appropriate flourish in the background.

The Funfolk Theatricals is a not-for-profit organization staffed by volunteers and funded exclusively through ticket sales and sponsors.  Led by Shan and Niki McFadden and other dedicated parents, these volunteers dedicate their time and talent to providing a unique, creative outlet for our youth.   Participants gain valuable experience, developing poise and confidence as they participate in a production from start to finish which is clearly visible in many of the returning participants.  Congratulations on another successful production and we look forward to the next season.  KG
