Jeff Traynor is delighted with the performance of his new Bobcat dealership in Cavan-Monaghan. The Peterborough native appreciates being closer to home and contributing to the local economy. The community appreciates it, too.

This May, Jeff  Traynor opened a new Bobcat dealer on Whittington Drive in Cavan-Monaghan.

It was an unlikely moment to launch a new business, but this owner/operator thinks long term and this isn’t his first rodeo.  His mission is to become the compact industry leader in Durham, the GTA and the Peterborough area.

He has spent 23 years in the business, working in Calgary for eight years.  In 2009, Traynor took over the Durham Bobcat dealership in Courtice which he continues to own and operate.  The Peterborough location extends the reach of his dealership to his home town and surrounding area.

When the opportunity arose to set up in Peterborough, Traynor was eager to take the plunge.  He sees the two outlets as complementary: their direct access to major transportation corridors allows him to easily move equipment between shops as the need arises.  He splits his workweek between the two locations, spending two days a week in Cavan-Monaghan.

Bobcat is a manufacturer of compact equipment including skid steers, loaders, excavators, utility vehicles, commercial grade mowers and small tractors.  Peterborough and Durham dealership’s main customers are landscapers, who have been particularly busy this season.   In fact, when Traynor opened the Peterborough dealership, his forecast was to sell 20 pieces of equipment.  After seven months, he has sold 26.

There are also a few pieces of used equipment available at any time that arrive through trade-ins.

Most of his inventory remains at the larger, Durham location, but the Whittington facility has secure, indoor and outdoor storage and service areas.  Equipment service can be provided at the shop or in the field if the customer prefers not to leave their job site.

Traynor describes the business as having four legs, like the ones on a table.  They are sales, service, parts and rentals.  If one leg is weak, he explains, the other legs keep the table upright.  That analogy explains why this business is more resistant to economic fluctuations.  When sales are slow, parts and service demands tend to rise as customers hold onto equipment a bit longer.

Traynor he comes from a family with deep roots in the Peterborough community.

Both outlets are staffed with experienced, full-time staff help their customers get back on the job with the right equipment to get the job done.
