Behind Wayne Blaby’s affable, laid-back veneer is a go-getter.  Even before he built his home on Ford Crescent more than 40 years ago, he was growing thousands of gladiolas for sale to local vendors while working at his day job at Intermediate Terminals in Peterborough.  In his basement, there is a woodworking shop where he used to build furniture, a small classroom area where he used to deliver computer classes, a shop and storage area for his computer sales and service business and an office.  There’s also a home theatre room where he can enjoy his 85” television when he wants to take it easy.

Did I mention he is also an active volunteer?  Wayne loves sports and hockey in particular.  He spent many years coaching minor teams in Millbrook, and served as a Director for the Peterborough Atom Liftlock Tournament.  Through his business, Computer Solutions Plus, he has refurbished used laptops for students in Belize for many years.

Since 1997, he and his business partner George Obey have been helping local residents and small businesses with their computer needs.  The business was launched after Wayne organized a group purchase of computers for several parents of his minor hockey team and saw an opportunity.  George brought the technical expertise and Wayne brought the business experience and together they have served the community for 23 years.  They have been ably assisted by Mike VanDrunen who began to work with Wayne as a teenager harvesting those glads in Wayne’s backyard.

Last month, Mike took the plunge and purchased Wayne’s interest in the firm, allowing Wayne to retire.  It will be business as usual, as the firm will continue to do what they do best: build customized computers that best suit their customers, setting them up, connecting them to networks and ensuring their owners understand how to use them.  The business will continue to operate out of Wayne’s home, but much of the work takes the form of house calls.  Through the Team Viewer software, George can take control of a client’s computer remotely (with their permission, of course) and fix a problem while the client watches the movements on his screen.

The biggest challenge for Wayne is to stop reaching for the receiver when the phone rings.  He’ll get over it.  He’ll have more time for the Peterborough Petes’ games, lacrosse events and trips to see the grandchildren in New Zealand.  Thanks for keeping us current and connected, Wayne.  Happy retirement!  KG
