John Collver:
My name is John Collver, and I am seeking election as Councillor for Ward 1 in Cavan Monaghan. I bring more than 50 years of experience in landscape architecture and multidisciplinary design across both the private and municipal sectors. I have been actively involved in our community as a former director on the Board of the Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society, Baxter Creek Watershed Alliance and a member of the Municipal Revitalization and Heritage Committee.
Although I live in Millbrook in Ward 3, my decision to run in Ward 1 reflects my belief that Cavan Monaghan is one community with a shared future. I see significant growth ahead, influenced by provincial housing priorities and development pressures from Peterborough and the surrounding region.
My platform centres on protecting Cavan Monaghan’s rural character and established neighbourhoods. I support housing choices that respond to local needs, including smaller homes, affordable housing, and seniors’ housing. North Monaghan also needs parks and recreation investments that keep pace with growth and serves all residents. My platform emphasizes planning infrastructure alongside development, including roads, water servicing, parks, and trails. I support protecting employment lands in North Monaghan and working with neighbouring governments to address servicing and economic development, while opposing annexation.
Fiscal responsibility is another priority. I support making decisions informed by the Township’s Asset Management Plan. We need to minimize long-term debt, carefully evaluate major expenditures, and keep tax increases targeted to inflation while maintaining essential services and balancing our tax base.
I also believe that open communication, meaningful public consultation and a Council that works collaboratively with residents, municipal staff and other levels of government are essential to success.
What I bring is experience, curiosity and a genuine commitment to listening before deciding. I would be honored to earn your vote this October.
