Millbrook’s Trout Unlimited is collaborating with Bobcaygeon Brewery with the release of Baxter Creek Ale. Every can sold will contribute to the organization’s tree planting initiative along the banks of Baxter Creek in support of its ecosystem.

Trout Unlimited Millbrook had some big plans this spring and, like many of you, we have had to plan, replan, then change our plans due to the recent COVID related lockdowns. We did however make some progress with our fundraising efforts thanks to the kind folks in this town. Here are a few updates.

The bottle drive organized by Trout Unlimited Millbrook and the Millbrook Farm and Pet Supply Store was put on hold on April 7th due to the lockdown rules. The bottle drive scheduled for April 24th with the Lion’s Club was also cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date. Despite these changes, we were able to raise $1500. This money will go towards purchasing trees for the community.

We are also excited to announce that we are collaborating with Bobcaygeon Brewery to release the Baxter Creek Ale. The release was originally scheduled for trout opening weekend, but has been delayed due to the lockdown. Stay tuned for the release in the coming weeks. This money will go toward purchasing trees for the community.

Trout Unlimited Millbrook is working with the Millbrook Lion’s Club to host a free tree giveaway this spring. We are optimistic that this will still go ahead this year, although we may have to delay it until August. We will release the details on the Town Hoopla Page and on our Trout Unlimited Facebook Page when we are authorized to move ahead with it. We are also hoping to donate trees to our local schools.

Trout Unlimited Millbrook will be conducting our annual electrofishing surveys in August this year. During these surveys trained crews collect data on fish populations, and their habitats in our local streams. These data are used to better understand how the fish are using the main channels and the tributaries. Despite Baxter Creek being a well-known trout stream, there is actually very little data available about the fish populations. Recent surveys have revealed the importance of the small tributaries to the trout populations, as these are where the young fish are feeding and growing before they move into the main channel. We will continue to focus on these tributaries in 2021 and will plan to provide a summary of our findings in the Millbrook Times in the fall, as we did last year. If you live on a watercourse in the Millbrook area, please reach out to troutunlimitedmillbrook@gmail.com.

Thanks for your continued support. We hope to be able to proceed with these and other programs this year. If you would like to join us, or more information about our group please check us out on Facebook or email us!
