Township Agrees to Negotiate With Developer to Buy Land for New Community Centre

Cavan Monaghan Township staff asked Council at its September 14th meeting to begin negotiations with Towerhill Developments Inc. to acquire approximately four hectares (10 acres) of land for the construction of a new community centre and associated amenities.

Council members expressed some concern about the need to buy the land now. “If we don’t use it,” Mayor Scott McFadden responded, “the developer will likely push for more homes on the land, which is currently designated as institutional.”

Chief Administrative Officer Yvette Hurley told the Council she supports the Mayor for backing the staff recommendation to buy the land now. Sensing that if the Township appears to be too anxious to buy the land from an owner who may hold out for a lot of money, Deputy Mayor John Fallis said the Township should be careful that the price it pays for the land is fair.

A study determined that the “ideal facility (for a new community centre) is a modern, energy-efficient, single pad community-scale arena with a number of components and facilities that will complement the principle uses of the arena, and also accommodate a wide variety of other indoor recreation, social, wellness and business activities and programs for all age groups.”…
