This Month at Our Libraries – May 2021

Spring is well under way and there is still plenty of time to get your gardens ready. Did you know that we also offer a seed library? We also have a selection of landscaping and gardening books that will help you have a successful growing year. You can also search our digital resources for documentaries, ebooks, and audiobooks on gardening too.

This month at the CMLibraries our literacy focus will be vocabulary skills. Join us in our Raising Readers group (through our Facebook page) where we demonstrate and explain how you can support your child’s literacy development. Why vocabulary? Vocabulary is one of the skills that directly builds comprehension skills. The more words you know the better you can understand what you are reading. Join our literacy initiative this month called “Wordy Wednesdays”. Simply find a way to share a favourite word and how it can be used or defined, write it on the sidewalk with chalk, make a sticker to wear, post it in the back window of your vehicle, tape a poster to your mailbox, write it on a rock, make a social media post, or any other way you can think to share your love of words. Visit our Facebook page to discover what the theme is for each day. Use the hashtag #millbrookonreads on social media.

Our Raising Readers group also offers tips and tricks as part of our Kindergarten Readiness program. Help your child learn to find their Green Zone before heading off to school and trying to find their calm in a potentially chaotic environment. You can also scroll back and take a look at topics you have missed.

As we begin to plan for our summer season at the libraries, we know that this year will again be different than most. To make sure we are supporting the needs of families in our community, connect with us and let us know how we can best help you. We hope to offer tutoring, story walks, and outdoor programs. Would families be interested in Math Walks, Science Walks, Art Workshops, Natural World Exploration? Send us an email or call your local branch to let our staff know how we can best help our families.

As always there are more details and activities available in our monthly newsletter, available in print format at your local branch or on our website. For more information follow our Facebook page (cmlibraries.ca) or call your local branch (Bruce Johnston Branch: 705 741 1253, Millbrook Branch 705 932 2919).
