This Month at Our Libraries – January 2021

Graphic supplied.

The only thing better than the start of a new year is the start of a new book!

There are many new titles available both in branch or on one of our digital platforms. If you require a library card number please use our online form available on our website, or call your local branch with questions.

During the 28 day lock down period the CMLibraries will be OPEN for CURB-SIDE PICKUP only. You can use our online catalogue to search for material and place a reserve, we will then contact you once your books are available. We will continue to make selecting books for our younger audience easy through our Book Bundle program. Simply fill out the form (age, reading level, interests, library card number), when your bundle is ready we will contact you to arrange pickup. You can find the link to request book bundles on our website (cmlibraries.ca).

The CMLibraries will be brightening up the lives of teens and tweens with rainbow themed take home activities for the month of January. Participants can request their colourful kits via email: outreach@cmlibraries.ca. We will be making kool aid pickles, ombre bath bomb dust, colourful scratch and sniff art, and more. These crafts may require some adult supervision.

The CMLibraries has made literacy a focus for 2021 and we will be providing a variety of programs to help boost reading skills. Patrons can borrow take home literacy based family games for a variety of ages, join our Raise a Reader group for weekly discussions and activities, request take home early literacy activities, and more! Later this year we will be offering a variety of reading programs and tutoring opportunities to patrons.

We are pleased to announce that with the hard work of our Community Threads group we were able to adopt a capybara from the Riverview Zoo. We hope to continue our animal inspired fundraising. If you are looking to keep busy during the winter our Community Threads group is looking for participants who can sew, knit, or crochet. We will meet virtually every third Saturday of the month at 2pm via Zoom. Grab your work in progress and join us as we get crafty with a variety of patterns.

Due to the lockdown our planned outdoor activities will be cancelled. However, we will be creating weekly self- guided story walks that are paired with a literacy scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt activities will be available for curb-side pickup or to print at home. The story walk will be located on the perimeter of the community garden located at the Millbrook Branch. Please be aware and follow social distancing guidelines if there is another family using the story walk.

¿Hablas español? Join our Spanish for Beginners Zoom classes to learn the basics. We will be hosting Tuesday night classes during the month of January. These classes start at 7:30pm and run for about 1 hour. We also host a Facebook group where we post the notes from classes and other details. Find us on Facebook at CMLibraries – Spanish for Beginners.
