The Council Column – Summer 2016

With the arrival of summer a number of events and projects are coming up.

First, however, given the weather we have been experiencing, please check the Township website regularly for notices regarding burn bans. As I write this Sunday night, the following applies:

June 24th, 2016 – I wish to advise you of the following restrictions surrounding open air burning in the Township of Cavan Monaghan.  These restrictions are issued based on our area’s risk of fire due to the lack of precipitation and/or adverse weather conditions (ie: high winds, high smog levels, extreme heat, etc.).

Effective immediately, no burning permitted except for campfires in the evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m – from Bill Balfour, Fire Chief.

On Monday of this week, Council members as well as members of the Board of the Millbrook Medical Centre met with the Peterborough Family Health Team to learn about potential changes to local health care related to the Patients First Discussion Paper. The paper was released by the Minister of Health and Long Term Care last December. A number of significant changes are proposed that will give LHINs, Local Health Integration Networks, more responsibilities in our communities. For those who would like to know more, visit the Ministry website, (specifically http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/news/bulletin/2015/hb_20151217.aspx )

This past Thursday, Minister Jeff Leal, MP Jamie Schmale and MPP Laurie Scott joined Council and Staff for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the renovated wastewater treatment plant. The project was made possible through the Building Canada Fund, a federal and provincial cost-sharing program designed to address national, regional and local infrastructure priorities.   The upgrades not only increase capacity but provide improved treatment. The funding also contributes to improvements and expansion to our water system.

Our Canada Day celebrations take place at Maple Leaf Park starting at 6:00 p.m. Join us for activities, cake and fireworks.

For those who haven’t been in downtown Millbrook lately, King Street is open again. The Downtown Revitalization continues with updates above and below pavement level. With input from the Downtown Revitalization Committee, the BIA and the Heritage Committee, refinished pavement, new sidewalks with improved accessibility and coloured pressed concrete, LED lighting, and trees have replaced the aged infrastructure. See the improvements this Saturday, July 2nd, at the 11th Annual Millbrook Classic Car show.

For the summer, Council meetings will occur July 4th and August 2nd at 1:00P.M. Although the revitalization project in Millbrook is completed, other capital projects are getting underway. On July 7th, tenders will be opened for construction of a sand dome in the Township Yard in Cavan. Several large culverts are being replaced or repaired as well, surface treatments are being applied to roads throughout the Township. Roadside trimming has begun. If only the dry weather slowed the roadside grasses and weeds.

Saturday, August 20th, will be Cavan Monaghan Race Night at Kawartha Downs. This event is a great opportunity to watch standardbred horses race. Council will present a blanket to the winner of Race 2. Please support this local industry.

Best wishes for a safe and happy summer.
