The hills start early for participants hitting the trail for St. John’s Annual Cavan Hills Country Run last Saturday.

Last Saturday members of St. John’s Ida Anglican Church Outreach Committee hosted their Annual Cavan Hills Country Run, organized and executed by the St. John’s Anglican Outreach Committee.

The event has been held under a wide range of weather conditions, and this year there was a reprieve in the weather, switching from sweltering heat and humidity to temperatures leaving the 134 participants more inclined to wear toques than sunhats.

Starting at the McCamus Farm on Stewart Line, the action travels through township roads and fields of crops and always draws a wide variety of participants including novice runners, families and dogs.  The seasoned runners selecting the 10Km route face a more difficult journey that includes a stretch along Sharpe Line known as “the corkscrew”- a particularly curvy section that includes a steep hill.  Back in the lineup were MP Jamie Schmale and veteran runner and former Olympian Bruce Kidd, who participate every year.   The shorter 4.7 km route provides unique challenges cutting through fields with steep inclines.

Runners and walkers enjoyed refreshments and a free massage delivered by registered Massage Therapist Adrianne Colby before and after the event.  Members of this congregation assumed duties as traffic control, as field Marshalls on the routes and keeping participants organized, fed and hydrated.

This year the run grossed $7,000 which will be distributed to the Warming Room and Millbrook Foodshare as well as supporting St. John’s Outreach ministry.  The popular event provides an opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy a challenging walk or run in the beautiful Cavan countryside as well as an opportunity to take in the breathtaking vistas from some of the higher elevations on the route.   Congratulations to all involved.  KG
