Open Halter Horse Award in memory of Ray Lowery

Approximately 240 kids attended Children’s Day on Thursday, June 6th, with Millbrook South Cavan students in grades one through three braving the rain to come on foot while North Shore Public School from Keene came on a bus.

There were eight stations of interest including the antique tractors, Squirrel Creek Farms’ maple tapping display, and an extensive display of agricultural exhibits aimed at explaining farming to the youngsters.

Despite threatening weather, both Friday and Saturday evening Truck and Tractor pull events proceeded as planned.

During the parade awards presentation on Saturday afternoon, MPP Laurie Scott and MP Jamie Schmale presented members of the Agricultural society’s 175th birthday and the 173rd fair.

Impact Motorsports was a new promoter for the ever popular demolition derby which took place on Sunday afternoon, where roughly 65 cars came to compete in Youth Compacts, Junk Run, Figure 8 Racing and Impact Compacts.  Competing in his first impact motorsports show in the Youth Compacts Class, Maisyn Feeney earned a nomination to the Youth Nationals.

On a more sombre note, the fair board introduced the Open Halter Horse Award in Memory of Ray Lowery who recently passed away.  A past President of the Fair, Mr. Lowery and his family have contributed a lot of time and dedication to the fair board over the years.  The winner of this new award was Nicole Robertson.

Another popular attraction was the petting zoo hosted by Petting Pals from Port Perry, where families had fun checking out the farm animals up close.  Other returning favourites were horse drawn wagon rides, beef, horse and rabbit shows, the antique tractor pull, and the homecraft exhibits.

Of course an event of this scale is never without some drama, and once again this year a cow escaped but unlike the adventuresome animal last year, this one was quickly retrieved.

The Millbrook Fair is made possible thanks to a great team of volunteers who pitch in and get things done as needed. Like most volunteer groups, the Fair Board is always looking for new volunteers and welcome any feedback to be considered for future years.  For more information, contact Millbrook Agricultural Society President Debra Post at debra_post@hotmail.com.  See you next year!  KG
