Summer is Officially Here!

By Courtney Spence

It is officially summer and we have some exciting activities planned! For more information on what is going on and to pre-register, visit our website at cavanmonaghanlibraries.ca.

Children’s Programming:

On Saturday, July 11th, Callie (Our Little Wormery) will be coming to our Bruce Johnston Branch from 10:30-11:30am to teach participants all about worms! Callie blends science, sustainability and sensory exploration in a way that feels like a discovery – not just a lesson. Through a hands-on introduction to worm composting, we dig into the wonderful world of worms — learning about their biology, exploring how composting works, setting up a worm bin, and watching these tiny recyclers turn food scraps into rich, healthy soil right before our eyes. *This activity is for children aged 5 and up.*

Join Courtney at our Millbrook Branch on Tuesday, July 14th at 4:00pm for the ultimate movie night. Library staff will provide snacks to eat during the movie, although we ask that you bring your own water bottle. Pajamas are optional, although strongly encouraged for ultimate comfort. *The movie will start at4:15pm so please arrive on time to choose your spot. Please also bring pillows and blankets that will be used to make the fort.*

Tween/Teen Programming:

Tracy (A River of Yarn) will be coming back to our Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesday, July 7th from 4:30-6:30pm to teach participants how to crochet. We will be learning how to hold a crochet hook, make a slip knot, and create a variety of stitches.

We will also be having a Learn to Sew Workshop at our Millbrook Branch on Tuesday, July 21st from 4:30-6:30pm. Nancy, Debbie, & Pat (Millbrook Needlers Quilt Guild)will be going over the anatomy of a sewing machine so that participants understand how a sewing machine works. Once participants feel comfortable, they will create their own item to take home with them. Stay tuned to fi nd out what project we will be working on. *Both of these activities are for those aged 8-18. One parent/guardian must be in attendance to provide additional assistance.*

Adult Programming:

On Tuesday, July 14th, Judi will be coming to our Millbrook Branch from 1:00-3:00pm to teach participants how to make a bookmark using English Paper Piecing (EPP). EPP is a hand-sewing method where you wrap fabric around paper templates and stitch the pieces together. Unlike foundation paper piecing (FPP) which uses a sewing machine, EPP is entirely done by hand and creates symmetrical designs around a center point.

To meet your crafting needs, Knotty Knitters will continue to meet during the summer. Our next session will be on Tuesday, July 28th from 3:00-7:00pm at our Bruce Johnston Branch.

Bring a project and let’s chat!
