Last month Resident Councils in Long-Term Care Homes celebrate their roles in representing residents in the management of their homes.
These are formal advisory groups consisting of residents only who are selected by all residents in a long term care home to provide a voice for all residents in a long term care home.
Last month, residents of Springdale Country Manor located on Clifford Line in Cavan Monaghan. It offers 68 residents private, semi-private and two-bed accommodations in a quiet country setting with individualized care for residents with dementia. Residents are offered an active social and recreational programs and physiotherapy services.
Among the fall decorations were posters celebrating the contributions of their Resident Council, which include fundraising through a seasonal raffles and plant sales to raise funds for special restaurant meals, purchasing bird feed and contributing to meal planning for residents.
For this organization, Resident Council meetings are held in a Town Hall style each month. All residents are welcome to these events and encouraged to participate, with resident Ken Schultz acting as the sole official resident representative. These meetings give residents a voice in their community.
With 128 residents, Centennial Place, the long-term care home operating in Millbrook is twice the size of Springdale and has been operating for more than 20years. A similar celebration was planned for this facility but due to illness the event was cancelled. The situation has improved and visitors are now welcome to return. They have an active Resident Council group which conducts fundraising events including the Christmas Craft Show. Proceeds from these events go contribute to resident activities and towards the purchase of prizes at their Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
