Spring Into Spring!

By Courtney Spence, CM Libraries

Now that it is officially May and the weather is starting to warm up, we can acknowledge that it is spring. Finally! With the excitement of spring in the air, we have a variety of programming for families and adults that centre around warmer weather, renewal, and growth.

We are kicking off our adult programming this month with a crafty workshop. On Tuesday, May 6th, join us at our Bruce Johnston Branch from 1:00-3:00pm to participate in our Book Folding Workshop. Judi will be showing us how to make a vase out of a book and flowers out of colourful magazines pages. Riding the crafting train, we will also be hosting a Learn to Knit Workshop at our Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesday, May 20th from 1:00-3:00pm. Courtney will be walking us through the process of making a dishcloth using the knit stitch.*All supplies will be provided, although if you have 4.5mm knitting needles and cotton yarn, please bring it with you.*

On Wednesday, May 21st from 1:00-3:00pm, join us in welcoming Sarah Cooling (lawyer with the Northumberland Community Legal Centre) to our Millbrook Branch for a workshop about wills and powers of attorney. Sarah will be discussing rights and responsibilities as well as answering your questions regarding consent and capacity. Sarah will also be speaking about sexual harassment in the workplace and answering your questions about employment.

Continuing with our Adult programming, Toonie Tuesday runs the second Tuesday (May 13th)of the month at 6:30pm at our Millbrook Branch. In May, we will be watching The Electrical Life of Louis Wain which is the true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, psychedelic pictures transformed the public’s perception of cats forever.

When it comes to our family programming this month, we are going full out when it comes to spring. Join us on Wednesdays for Crafting Corner, an activity that is available from 10:30am-4:30pm (while supplies last) in the Harry Williams Room. In May, supplies will be provided to make adorable paper umbrellas, butterflies out of pipe cleaners and beads, popsicle stick birdfeeders, and beautiful flower planters out of tin cans and napkins.

Drop into our Bruce Johnston Branch anytime between 10:00am-12:00pm on Thursdays to take part in our activity of the day, led by Courtney with the assistance of parents/guardians. In May, we will be making farm animal bookmarks, windchimes out of string and beads, milk carton bird houses, frisbees, and paper plate turtles. *While supplies last.*

We also have Explore with Becky which takes place on the second (May 10th) and fourth (May 24th) Saturday of the month from 11:00am-12:00pm at our Millbrook Branch. In May, we will be using air-dry clay to make a lovely trinket bowl for mom and an amazing no-sew felt animal mask.*While supplies last.*

Just a reminder that both branches of the CMLibraries will be closed on Thursday, May 22nd due to staff training.
