Spring has sprung! – Millbrook Library Events

Photo supplied. Library staff are continuing to offer crafting sessions called, Community Threads, where participants learn new crafting skills.

While libraries are no longer the quiet places they used to be, they are still places of solace in a busy world. Most of the time our branches offer areas for quiet work or study.

We are so happy to welcome people back to the library, where things have returned almost to normal. Staff and visitors are encouraged to continue wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and still maintaining social distancing. That aside, we are starting to add back more and more activities.

On Thursday, May 5th @ 1pm we will have the first of 4 gentle flow yoga classes. Class size will be limited. Please visit our website to register. The class will be held in the Harry Williams Room at the Millbrook Branch.

Storytime at the Bruce Johnston Branch will continue on Thursdays during May. On Fridays at the Millbrook Branch, storytime will be outside and will feature a return to the “Learning Trail” (story walk around the Community Garden). This will be weather permitting and participants are invited inside for a craft after exploring the Learning Trail.

Community Threads will meet on Saturday, May 21st at the Bruce Johnston Branch and on Wednesday, May 25th at the Millbrook Branch. While we are still continuing with our fidget items – “Crafts with Purpose”, this month, Andréa Monner will join us both days for a felting demonstration. Community Threads will meet from 11am-1pm with the felting demonstration commencing at 11:30. Some felting supplies will be available to borrow for those who would like to try their hand at this fascinating craft.

Growing out of the Community Threads, spearheaded by Judi Obey and Kimberly Lackie, we have some beautiful crocheted rose lapel pins for sale at the libraries. Community Care will be distributing another 50 of these pins to women who will appreciate a small gift for Mother’s Day. We are so grateful for the time, energy and creativity that Judi and Kimberly give to our Community Threads program.

National Volunteer Week ran from April 23rd-April 30th. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers who are associated with the CM Libraries. To the students who volunteer for their community service hours; Sharon who wrangles the books for the book sale; Julie who makes sure the children’s room looks fabulous; the staff who put in extra hours for programs like Community Threads; and finally to the members of the Library Board who spend a lot more than just the 2 hours each month of the Board meeting.
