Spring and Summer Road Work Projects – Some Pain Required for Future Gain

At this week’s BIA Breakfast event, Director of Public Works Wayne Hancock lay out the schedule of events for the much anticipated road improvements in the downtown area. As outlined in the capital budget process, there will be some significant improvements implemented on the section of King Street between Union and Tupper streets, which will include the replacement of water and sewer pipes, followed by complete asphalt resurfacing, the replacement of existing brick pavers with impressed concrete, new line markings, crosswalk and bump out areas and the installation of plastic boxes planted with trees. While the pavement is up, the township will also proceed with the replacement of underground electrical cables and the concrete bases of the street light standards. The following year, the fixtures themselves will receive a retrofit installation of LED lights that offer brighter light with reduced hydro consumption. This King Street project will commence April 2nd or as soon as conditions allow, with a completion date scheduled for May 31st.

During the street renovation, which is expected to take from four to six weeks, King Street will be closed to traffic, with a detour route following Union to Centre Street and exiting on Tupper Street. Temporary water main services will be installed to ensure services to the affected customers are maintained.   Pedestrian traffic will continue throughout the construction.

Once this major project is completed, it will be followed by additional works projects further along King Street, beginning with the section from Union to Cavan which will be completed this summer while renovations further along King Street from Cavan to Huston are scheduled for the summer of 2017.
