Sensational Seams

It’s a family affair at Sensational Seams with Wilma and Jamie Kulyk and daughter Tamara.

If it’s time to cover up your windows, it might be time to call in the pros.

You can always pick up a curtain panel or roller blind at Home Depot, but if you’re ready to invest in the beauty and function of your space, there is a wide range of products and styles that can put your personal stamp on your living space and make it more functional and energy efficient at the same time.

Wilma Kulyk has been providing custom window coverings to homes in the Durham region, Port Hope, Cobourg and Millbrook/Cavan for 35 years.  In 1986, Wilma launched the Sensational Seams, offering custom window coverings and bedding products.  As automation features became more popular in blinds and shades, her husband Jamie joined her.  A master electrician with years of programming with GM allowed him to easily make the transition to a certified installer of motorized window coverings.

The business has extended its product offerings beyond window treatments to include a complete range of interior design services, offering advice on furniture, lighting, colour and custom rug selection for residential, commercial and institutional clients.

For years Wilma served the Cavan Monaghan area working with Bonnie McQuarrie, owner of Bear Essentials retail store in Millbrook and Bethany Hills Interiors.  Wilma loved working with Bonnie, interpreting her interior design ideas with custom window and bedding products from her Newcastle location.   Wilma hopes to fill the gap left by Bonnie’s retirement with her extensive array of home design products and services to help homeowners make their living spaces beautiful, unique and practical.  Daughter Tamara has recently returned to the business to help address the growing demand for custom drapery that is an expression of the clients’ personal style.

A complimentary in-person or virtual appointment traditionally starts the consultation process.  A telephone discussion will help Wilma identify some samples and products that might be suitable to get the creative process started.  Budget considerations also take centre stage, as there is no point falling in love with a product that is beyond the budget.  Care is taken to ensure the project brings the customers’ vision to life, instead of encouraging a current fad or design idea the client doesn’t love.  The designers also want to understand how the space will be used to ensure the final product is functional and as well as beautiful in the eyes of the customer.

Interior Design services can be as simple as finishing touches such as window coverings or complete makeovers including room design, paint and wallpaper consultation, lighting selections and flooring decisions.  Using a design professional can provide confidence and help avoid buyer’s remorse a few months after the purchase.

There is a growing interest in motorized window covering products these days.  Motorized shades, shutters and blinds are not just for looks or privacy, but can reduce heating and cooling costs and are often integrated in today’s smart home systems.  Some products adjust themselves automatically based on a pre-set program.  Snowbirds enjoy this feature, as it offers the security of giving the illusion they are at home.  Motorized features can also be initiated using a smartphone or tablet- just ask Alexa!  Wilma notes that like any technology, prices have fallen significantly and systems have become more user-friendly.  Jamie’s ability to install these products means they are installed quickly and correctly.

Looking through magazines, websites and design-themed websites can stimulate creativity, but local designers know what is available in our area.  If your living space is ready for an upgrade, using a local professional can help take your ideas and bring them home.  For more information, visit the website at sensationalseams.com.  KG
