On June 5th, the Millbrook Agricultural Society hosted its first Maple Syrup Competition conducted remotely.  Despite the lack of an audience, the event attracted seventeen entries.  Dave Brackenridge brought years of maple syrup production experience from his family’s syrup operation to the contest, supporting the event by judging the entries.

Among the winners in the Beginner Producer category for those with less than five years of production experience was Kathy Bigelow who took first place in the Amber and Dark Maple Syrup categories.   Kauri D’Aoush was awarded second place in the Amber competition and Nancy Kunzel in the Dark category.

Among the experienced producers, Craig and Merissa Johnston took top prize in both the Amber and Maple categories, followed by Keith Schultz whose entries came second.  Steve Gibson and Paul Gilmour’s Amber entry took third spot, while Don and Cindy Hudson took third place in the Amber syrup category.

Hadley and Wynn Jennings were the sole winners in the Youth category for producers under sixteen years of age, with their Dark syrup exhibit.

Congratulations to all participants and thanks to the Millbrook Agricultural Society for encouraging this delicious Canadian tradition.  The Society would like to extend a huge thank you to Carol Gibson and Gibson Excavation for organizing this event.  KG
