Preparations Begin for Millbrook/South Cavan School Expansion

Millbrook Portables moved (640x480)

Last week, students housed in portables at Millbrook/South Cavan School packed up their belongings in preparation for the relocation of their portable classrooms to accommodate a significant construction project at their school.   On Sunday, the current portables were pushed back from their previous location to make room for the construction activity. The timelines for this significant construction project have not yet been established.

What is known at the moment is that the school will receive five additional classrooms and a facility which will provide full day care. This service will be operated by Compass Early Learning and Care, which is a non-profit corporation providing early learning and care for children from 6 weeks to 12 years. Established in Peterborough in 1981 as a small home child care program, it now operates 24 licensed daily programs from full day child care, nursery school and before and after school programs for children across Peterborough County, the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Region of Durham. They currently operate a before and after program at the Millbrook school.

The school population at Millbrook/South Cavan currently sits at 425 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. With four portables already in use and more families expected to start arriving this fall in the new development, the need for the expansion is clear. At this stage, the project is anticipated to be completed during the 2016 – 2017 school year, with the official opening likely to take place at a natural break in the school year such as the Christmas or March Break.
