Politics – 2022

Laurie Scott, Incumbent MPP

Laurie Scott was born and raised in the riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock and was inspired to enter public service by her late father, Bill Scott, who served as MP for 28 years.

For more than fifteen years, Laurie has been a strong advocate for issues facing rural Ontario. Laurie has been a tireless advocate for victims of human sex trafficking in Ontario, both inside and outside of the Legislature and has received national awards for her work on combating human trafficking and child advocacy.

Laurie has served as both Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Labour and during this time, she was able to make important changes to help the people of Ontario. Most notably, she was a part of the PC government’s $4 billion investment so 1.4 million people will be able to access high-speed internet, including right here in Millbrook.

Another accomplishment during her time as Minister of Labour was passing legislation to protect rural fire halls and promote public safety in small communities by ending the unfair persecution of double hatters. She has also made key labour reforms that have spurred job creation across the province and is passionate about encouraging women to get actively involved in public life.

Bringing more women into the skilled trades and building a strong work force is a goal of Laurie’s and over the last 18 months, she is proud the PC government was able to add more than 300,000 jobs after companies had packed up and left the province because it was too expensive to do business. Now, Ontario has recovered and added tens of thousands more jobs than it lost during the pandemic and we’re helping people learn the skills they need to earn bigger pay cheques and start life-long careers that provide for them and their families.

Before entering politics, Laurie was a nurse for 20 years and she continues to be a strong advocate for local health care and has brought long overdue health and long-term care investments to the riding including 300 new and 436 redeveloped long-term care beds under the PC government’s $6.4 billion commitment to build more than 30,000 net new beds by 2028.

Laurie Scott and the PC party have a plan to build new homes, roads, and highways, a plan to give you a break and put more money in your pocket, a plan to create new and better jobs, and a plan to stay open.

Meet Green Party Candidate Tom Regina

Tom Regina is among the founding members of the Green Party Constituency Association for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. He is concerned about the increasingly divisive partisanship in our political culture that stands in the way of governance for the general good of all citizens. Working towards electoral reform, social equity and ecological wisdom are among the Green values of “doing politics differently” that most motivate Tom to run as a Green candidate.

Green Party policies are founded on environmentalism, equity and respect in way that other parties simply do not try. That is why Tom believes that we need more Green MPPs at Queen’s Park and he wants to be among them to voice and amplify your concerns.

Tom has been residing in Haliburton for over 30 years, within easy walking distance of Haliburton Highlands Secondary School where he taught music and was the Head of Arts. His career as a teacher in a rural community has given him deep insight to the challenges faced by many families regarding equitable access to housing and transportation as well as employment and recreational opportunities.

As a strong advocate for Arts Education and community building through arts participation, Tom has been a founding member of two community choirs, a local music festival for students of all ages and the Highlands Summer Festival which provides theatre experience for community members in a semi-professional setting.

Tom and his wife, Lauren, raised their three children in Haliburton and are now enjoying a new role as grandparents.

Tom can be seen as an occasional performer in summer theatre productions and as a member of the Highlands Chamber Orchestra.

Meet Liberal Candidate Don McBey

Government should empower people to bring out the best, while protecting them from the worst. After many years of medical/legal and community advocacy and provincial public service, most recently as a Vice-Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, I am running for Member of Provincial Parliament to address two issues people are increasingly concerned about affordability and health.

Not a career politician, I am an impartial and careful decision maker – concerned with making good, sustainable decisions… unswayed by political or other pressure. As a trained mediator I listen to both sides of an issue. In ministry with the Methodist Church of Great Britain and United Church of Canada, I have served rural, urban and remote communities, which along with my years as a therapeutic counsellor has endowed me with a practical, get-it-done compassion for those caught off balance by our increasingly risk-filled world.

I pledge to use my skills and experience to empower the people of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock to meet the personal and financial challenges of a changing world and to help restore trust in government and predictability in their daily lives.

After years of private and community advocacy and public service, most recently as a Vice-Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, I am running for Member of Provincial Parliament to focus on two areas I believe people are very concerned about: affordability and health. I will use my skills and experience to empower the people of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock to meet the financial challenges of a changed world and to help restore trust in government and predictability in their daily lives.

I have a history of helping individuals and communities be successful through my career as a lawyer, a therapeutic counsellor, a community advocate in central London, England with the Methodist Church, and my Ministerial duties with the United Church of Canada.  I am an impartial and careful decision maker – concerned with making the best decisions… unswayed by political or other pressures.

Our Liberal team is committed to pulling Ontario through this health crisis and transitioning from pandemic to endemic by repairing our health care system including Long Term Care. This includes proper oversight of long-term care, so that retirement living never again becomes incarceration in sickness-ridden isolation wards. We would also make our economy less dependent fossil fuels and global supply chains by investing in local green infrastructure.

This time – Vote Liberal!

Barbara Doyle – NDP – Bio

Barbara lives in her childhood hometown of Lindsay, manages the operations of the Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives and believes government should benefit all Ontarians. Co-founding the Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition, Barbara knows how important strong health care is for everyone as she fights against privatization and harmful cuts to local services people depend on.

As a community volunteer and advocate, Barbara has seen how families in her community have been unable to meet their basic needs. Rental units are scarce and as prices skyrocket, she’s watched as the dream of home ownership has slipped away from many Ontarians. Housing, education, healthcare, support for seniors and making everyday living more affordable are major and immediate priorities of the Ontario NDP.

Says Doyle, “I love my community and I am proud of who we are and what we have built here. I sincerely believe that all levels of government must work together to get the job done, just like I believe that no matter how you vote, we are all each other’s neighbours, coworkers, and families in need of the same basic things to improve. We will immediately start with a 20% raise for OW and ODSP recipients, raise wages, and make health care and support for seniors top priorities.

I will never think it’s more important for corporate CEO’s and shareholders to pull multi-million dollar bonuses over ensuring the care of our seniors and living wages for their caregivers in LTC.  I will never think it’s ok for our children to keep having cuts to education and reduced opportunities or support a system in which working a full-time job won’t provide enough for housing, good food and basic necessities. I believe I can be a strong part of making things better, I’m ready to do the work and I have hope that many others in our community share these same values with me and want things to change for the better.”

Barbara is determined to fight for an Ontario where education, housing you can afford, good jobs, and strong pensions are accessible to everyone and that climate action is a priority so that our future can be bright in an environmentally responsible and prosperous Ontario.
