Peterborough Police Service Launches Auxiliary Constable Recruitment Campaign

“The members of our Auxiliary Unit are an integral part of our Service.

The enhancement these dedicated volunteers bring to our service is phenomenal. They are value added to our organization,” says Inspector Neil Collins, Operations, Peterborough Police Service.

The Auxiliary Unit, currently comprised of 18 constables, two Staff Sergeants and three Sergeants, is overseen by the Operations Division of the Peterborough Police Service.

Each year the members of the Unit volunteer thousands of hours to the communities of the City of Peterborough, the Ward of Lakefield and the Township of Cavan Monaghan.   Most of these volunteers hold full-time jobs in completely unrelated fields, choosing to give back to the community by joining our Service.

Their role with our Service includes: assisting at parades, special events and with our R.I.D.E programs, providing information on crime prevention and facilitating crime preventions programs such as the Homeguard Inspection Program, conducting car seat installations and working alongside our frontline officers during regular police patrols.

Auxiliary officers also participated in numerous charity events in 2017 including Pedal for Hope, Torch Run for Special Olympics, Cram-A-Cruiser, Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival, Kids n’ Cops Fishing Day in conjunction with Big Brothers Big Sisters Peterborough and the Lock-it-or-lose it holiday campaign in partnership with Lansdowne Place Mall.

Auxiliary members are selected on the basis of their ability to complete the training program and their availability for service throughout the year. Members must volunteer a minimum of 12 hours each month, attend regular in-service training sessions and commit to a two year volunteer term.

Initial training consist of classroom instruction, such as, powers of arrest and criminal code, physical restraining methods and firearms qualification. Although auxiliary members are not issued firearms, they must be capable of handling a firearm in extraordinary or critical circumstances.

The closing date for applications is October 26, 2018. To learn more about our upcoming Auxiliary Recruitment please visit our website: www.peterboroughpolice.com/learn/operations/auxiliary-unit. KG
