Peterborough Police Service Contract for Cavan Monaghan Extended for One Year

In 2021, Cavan Monaghan entered into a five-year service contract with the Peterborough Police Service (PPS).

Annual increases are budgeted into the contract, providing a stable and predictable cost for this significant municipal expenditure and helping the municipality plan, budget and secure related insurance for this critical service. Under the terms of this contract, costs have escalated at an average rate of 5% each year. The agreement is set to expire on December 31st, 2026 but has a clause allowing for a one year extension. Given this is an election year, staff recommended that the municipality trigger this extension option to allow the next Council time to conduct their own research and engage in discussions with the PPS as well as with the OPP to develop a competitive contract for future services. This extension was supported by the current Police Services Board and was approved by Council at the August 10th meeting, allowing contract with the PPS to continue until December 31st, 2027.
