Open Studio Features Work by Local Artists

Original paintings by Joellen Brydon.

You are invited to visit our fourth fall Open Studio on September 21-22 to see the work of five local artists.

Joellen Brydon’s vibrant paintings explore local histories, domestic life and stories that come from her Irish ancestors. There was always a poem, a song, or a bit of harmless gossip that would illustrate or elaborate the idiosyncrasies in human nature… Joellen’s objective is to recapture forgotten histories and simple stories which become woven into the fabric of a culture.

Pictured is a painting by Emma Hesse entitled “Slipstream Twine” with a vase by Louise Wilson in the foreground.

Janette Froncz will show her elegant work in stoneware. Her pieces are lovely functional forms that are warm to the touch and to the eye.

John Ireland’s woodwork is known to many locally and beyond. His work ranges from custom furniture to public and private cabinet commissions. He will show a collection of lidded containers and carved bowls made from wood collected over 45 years of woodworking.

Barbara Walker’s garden fish in glorious colours are made from pine that is first turned on a lathe by her husband John Ireland. She paints the fish using exterior house paints and finishes them with marine spar varnish. The colours are inspired by the flowers found in Barb’s garden and the detailed markings are reminiscent of the markings she incorporates into her weavings.

I work in porcelain. Over the years I have drawn on the traditional carving and inlay techniques, on my pots. These processes make for a black and white surface that is often enriched with colourful glazes, enamel work and sometimes gold luster.

This year we are remembering and including our dear friend and fellow artist Emma Hess who passed away this past July. Many of you will remember her exquisite paintings from the Millbrook Gallery. Her work, seemingly effortlessly made, has been widely collected and celebrated in Canada and the US.

Please join us September 21-22 from 11-4 at 700 Carmel Line, Millbrook.
