North Cavan School Families Celebrate at the CMCC

North Cavan Public School Families chose to celebrate the season at the CMCC last month. For several hours during the evening of December 5th, they took over the facility with a wide variety of activities organized by the parents of their local School Council. These students embraced the event, choosing their own unique Christmas wardrobes and accessories to reflect their festive spirit.

On the evening of December 5th, North Cavan families congregated at the CMCC for a Christmas event hosted by members of their School Council. They took full advantage of the facilities available, renting the ice for a private hour of public skating, offering snacks and crafts in the banquet room and holding a raffle and photo shoots in the Studio. Youngsters even took control of the stairs to the walking track, using it as a stage as the students entertained wearing festive outfits, red reindeer noses and sang holiday songs. At the foot of the stairs, the appreciative crowd lobbied for position to snap a commemorative photo of the heart-warming performances.

In the studio, tables were spread with a wide array of gift baskets put together by the students. Each class had collected items for their class gift basket for the raffle based on a theme they chose, featuring sports items, movie night treats, board games and more. Raffle tickets were sold and winners selected by a draw at 6pm. The raffle raised $2,631 for the North Cavan School Council, which will be used to fund extra-curricular events such as hosting dance and yoga instructors, field trips, special technology purchases and special school events.

School Councils are volunteer committees that providing parental and community input into their home schools. Acting as an advisory body, school councils provide ideas and opinions to assist the principal in making the school a better place for learning. Community members are elected by parents and guardians, and are joined on the committee by a staff representative, and work together to improve student achievement, create unique opportunities for their students, and address local issues and concerns.

Transportation costs prevent North Cavan students from participating in regularly scheduled school skating events that Millbrook/South Cavan students enjoy each year, so this provided North Cavan families to fully embrace the facility and all it has to offer. The venue offered a variety of locations for different events that allowed the families of all 208 North Cavan students to bomb around and take in the various activities. Parent Council representatives counted the event as a success, and look forward to finding interesting uses for the funds raised. KG
