North Cavan Class Learns Many Lessons in Student Business

My name is Braylen Earle and I am 10 years old. I am a grade 4 student at North Cavan Public School. This year has been fabulous for Ms. Crouch’s Gr. 3|4 class. We have raised ~$1,594 from selling Bean Bag Chickens and Scrunchies to our school and class.

How did we raise all this money? By running our own businesses and learning to sew. Our businesses are called ‘Scrunchie Squad’ and ‘Bean Bag Buddies’. But first I’m going to tell you about how all of this was possible! Back in December 2021, Ms. Crouch asked our class if we wanted to run our own student business. Our class was eager to get started. So back in January we needed to figure out a name for our business. Students generated names and then we took a vote and there were ~10 options and we chose ‘’Scrunchie Squad’’.

The first time my class got a chance to sew was on Valentine’s Day we each sewed one scrunchie for someone special. The feedback from those who received a special scrunchie was positive. Some of the replies from those who also received a scrunchie were “I’m so excited, when are you guys opening for sales?” The first thing we did was set a goal: it was $1000. On the day we planned to have our first sale, we realized we needed to make lots more scrunchies because all the students were saying they were going to support our business! We sold out our whole stock in 15 minutes. Not everyone that brought money got to buy a scrunchie because of how fast we sold out!

We want to extend a huge thanks to Mrs. Benns, who sewed lots of scrunchies for us to sell and donated fabric. It was a big help because every day we had sales we sold out all our scrunchies. A BIG thank you goes to the Cavan Monaghan Libraries who loaned us their sewing machine that allowed us to bring our business to life.

When I asked my classmates what their thoughts were on our business, here are a couple of their replies: “Working on the Scrunchie Squad gave me new skills, sewing, measuring and making decisions.” -Sophie W.  “Made me feel included, helped me learn new things, it was really fun to learn new skills. -Cooper E. “Being a member of the Scrunchie Squad is so much fun, I’m so surprised I haven’t poked myself with the needle yet!” -Levi N.

You might be thinking what will we spend all this money on? Well first we had a pizza party. It was free because of how long it took but we are going to buy a bunch of books and sign our names in them and donate them to our school library. We have a lot of money so we can probably buy around 100 books for our library.

The future of Scrunchie Squad and Bean Bag Buddies is unknown right now but our idea for it was to do the same thing next year because a teacher said she would be willing to take it on in the 2022/2023 school year.
