What it’s like to be in Grade 8 at Millbrook South Cavan

By Newspaper club members Alexis T and Hailey G

Well some people are wondering what it’s like to be a grade 8 at Millbrook South Cavan Public School. Well one thing for sure is that it is so much fun and we have people looking up to us. But a really hard thing is that we have to leave this school and make a big choice as to which high school we attend. The other part of this question is which high school is the best fit for me.

We went to Crestwood on November 6th 2019. The school committee planned a great day for us and the grade 12’s were very helpful. My personal view on Crestwood is that it’s a great high school and I am looking forward to being there next year. It is super fun knowing that we get to go on the grad trip in May. Some of the kids opinions on grade 8 are that it is awesome and not that easy at the same time.

In our opinion, grade 8 is awesome.

Student Teachers at Millbrook

By Newspaper Club Member Maia McLean

We have new student teachers at our school this fall. These students are from Trent University. They come to our classrooms to learn how to manage and teach a class. We are so thankful that they come to our school to help their learning as well as ours. They are like our teachers’ sidekicks, and they bring a new perspective to our learning. Thank you to our wonderful student teachers! We appreciate you coming here to our school!

Me To We Christmas This Year…..

By Newspaper club member Ava Reid

Millbrook’s on the edge of their seats waiting for Christmas….. Every once in a while we try and remind ourselves that it’s only November, of course there’s no problem with some early excitement! Let me tell you Me to We has tons of fun and exciting things planned for the Christmas holiday! One of the main things the Me to We Club loves to do in favour of the holiday is to sell the “Under One Son “Christmas ornaments. These ornaments aren’t just decorations for a tree, each and every one are hand made by women and men in Haiti. The whole idea is to help end poverty and turn hobbies into future jobs. The funds from the sales of these ornaments go back to the people in Haiti themselves, leaving some behind for the Me to We group! There are many different types of ornaments available .Some are small tree ornaments selling for $8 each.  There are also items of house decor available and last but not least there is a tree topper. Don’t worry though, that’s not all.  There has also been some talk about spirit days and bake sales.

As of now Spirit days will mostly be on Fridays some spirit days include; Friday December 6th dress up in red and green; Friday December 13th wear an ulgy Christmas sweater and any Christmas headwear; Thursday December 19th dress up as Santa or his elves and last but certainly not least on Friday December 20th come to school in your comfiest pair of pajamas. The choir will also be performing at the Seniors lunch at Saint Thomas Anglican Church. Millbrook South Cavan will be having their Christmas concerts during the day the week of December 16th. Well that’s all, but I am more than certain there will be more events that will pop up to celebrate the Christmas holiday here at Millbrook!

Millbrook South Cavan School’s Compost System

By Newspaper club member Miya Bonnell

Trish, Millbrook South Cavan Public School’s lovely custodian, has been working hard to come up with a quick, easy and clean way to  reduce the amount of unnecessary waste our school is producing. And so far it has been successful.  In the past couple of weeks there has already been a noticeable decline in the amount of waste our school has produced.  We couldn’t have done it without the wonderful staff and students in our school. In every classroom, there is a recycling bin, a garbage bin, and the newest addition-  a compost bin, where we can put paper towels and food scraps. And one to two times a week a wonderful group of grade eight students go around to their assigned halls to empty the bins into the assigned hall bin. This takes about 5 minutes out of the students’ day and it makes a huge difference in our community.

Lots of people think to themselves that they can’t change the world alone but you can! One idea in our school has improved our earth. Not only is Trish always improving the flow of our school, she is helping the earth.  Less garbage means less damage to the environment. I’m hoping that if one lovely custodian can get over 500 kids to use a compost bin to improve the flow in our school you can improve the flow of your house. If you’re a kid, ask your parents for a compost bin. If you are a parent, aunt, grandparent or a friend, you should try out a compost bin and help the earth. This shows how one person no matter how small the deed is you can have an impact.
