New Organization Established to Help Protect Local Water Courses

Growing up in the area has fueled a passion for the outdoors in Scott Calder and his wife Cori Carveth.

They hope to share this love with their young daughter, but why stop there?  The couple has been approved to launch a local chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada which will help them share their passion with the community and contribute to the protection and enhancement of local water courses.

Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) is a registered Canadian not for profit organization focused on the conservation, protection and restoration of Canada’s freshwater ecosystems and their cold water resources for current and future generations.  A leader in water and fisheries protection with more work on the ground than any other national water conservation organization, the 40-year old organization is guided by science and research and fueled by the passion of volunteers and professional staff in local chapters across the country.

While outdoor recreation is a huge draw to the area, the small cold water trout streams are often overshadowed by interest in the larger waters of the Kawartha Lakes.  Through this organization, Scott and Cori will start with a focus on the beautiful Baxter and Squirrel Creeks that meander through the town and surrounding landscape.  They hope to bring existing groups and residents of all ages together to work collectively to maintain and in some areas improve local stream systems to enhance their potential as an ideal trout habitat.

The organization will also serve as a resource for local landowners seeking assistance with issues such as erosion, sediment control, bank stabilization, riparian planting and stream cleanup by providing assistance through volunteers and the professional network on Trout Unlimited Canada.  Ultimately, the couple hopes to improve fish populations, fish habitat, drinking water and the overall aesthetics of the landscape together with like-minded members of the community.

As a biologist on staff with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Cori is well-versed in the science behind establishing and maintaining water quality and her professional network has already expressed support.

Join them in their first meeting at 7pm on September 11th at the Lions’ Den to discuss the issues in the area and learn about ways to help take care of our streams and rivers with the support of a well-informed, international organization focused on preserving our fresh water systems for future generations.  KG
