My Bucket List, Backwards

When the concept of “Bucket List” came to my attention, I made one: Make a quilt. See the Grand Canyon. Meet Paul McCartney…

After a while, I worried that I would never finish the Bucket List, and I would be unfulfilled. So I changed my philosophy.

Never mind what you have not done, or what you have left to do, or what you will never do. Be thankful for the experiences you have already had.

I once wrote for a newspaper. Took pictures, too. Because of that job, I got to jump out of an airplane. I’ve lived in North-Western Ontario and fished the Lake of the Woods. I interrupted Rick Hanson during his trek across Canada. And before that…I lived on the shores of Lake Ontario. And I ate a tequila worm. I met Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

And after that…My cat won a fluffy tail contest. I birthed a child. I saw the Sistine Ceiling. Today I saw a bunch of renegade golf-ball sized tomatoes on King Street, Millbrook, in front of Rachel Crawford’s printing store. It was an experience that gave pause for wonder.

Make a list of the things you have already done, seen or been. Start by going backwards, and you will find that going forward is the purpose of life.

Add to the Backwards Bucket List as often as possible-things that you have already lived. And soon you will see opportunities for new life experiences. Every day, every moment. It all counts.
