Millbrook South Cavan Extension Update

Plans have just been released illustrating the extension that will proceed to provide Millbrook South Cavan School some much needed space. The 10,570 square foot extension will include five classrooms as well as the much anticipated Daycare facility.

Last month, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board authorized administration to award the tender for the Millbrook/South Cavan Public School addition providing that in addition to meeting the tender requirements the successful bid does not exceed Ministry approved funding of $3.44 million.

Construction is anticipated to begin in July, continuing through the fall with an expected occupancy scheduled for January 2017. Upon completion, the school will have 5 new classrooms and a Day Care facility operated by local child care provider Compass Early Learning, and will receive upgrades to the existing washrooms in the Junior/Intermediate hall.

A fourth portable arrived last week for use in the fall until the new space is available, as an existing classroom will be disrupted during the renovation project as it will be converted into a new custodial office, academic storage and electrical room. Other classes will be moved around during the summer, but once the occupancy permission is received, classes operating in the four portables will move into new classrooms and the portables will be removed.

The extension comes off of the existing building on the south side, providing 982 square meters (10,570 square feet) of extra space. A new 30 spot parking area will be created on the south side of the building, and new asphalt basketball courts will be installed to the west of the new parking zone. The Daycare facility will have fenced-in play areas divided by gates to allow segregated play areas for each age group and a separate entrance and loading zone to facilitate safe drop-off of youngsters.

Like any significant construction project, the timelines are guidelines and are subject to unexpected obstacles. However the anticipation of including all classes in a permanent building and particularly the opening of the daycare facility in the community is growing and is a welcome change to the trend of empty classrooms and closing schools experienced by neighbouring communities in recent years. KG
