Millbrook Skating Club Welcomes New Changes for 2018-2019 Skating Season

The Millbrook Figure Skating Club has provided affordable, quality skating instruction for Millbrook and the surrounding for many decades.

Its inclusive programs help skaters to develop their skills at their own pace through group and one-on-one support. Through skating, the Club strives to develop qualities in their skaters and their families that prepare them for life outside of the rink.

In preparation for the new Cavan Monaghan Community Centre, scheduled to open fall 2019, the Millbrook Skating Club welcomes new changes for their 2018-2019 skating season. The Millbrook Figure Skating Club has officially changed its name to the Millbrook Skating Club to better represent their CanSkate program, which is not sport specific. Although it specializes in figure skating, the Millbrook Skating Clubs’s learn-to-skate CanSkate program is designed for beginners of all ages. Through both one-on-one and group coaching, skaters develop balance, control, and agility as they learn to skate confidently. All skills learned in CanSkate can be applied to any ice sport that skaters choose pursue including hockey, figure skating, and ringette.

The Millbrook Skating Club is proud to offer the following programs for their 2018-2019 skating season:

Pre-CanSkate

For skaters ages 3 – 5. This program teaches the basics of standing up, falling down, and walking on ice blades. Pre-CanSkate is a 25 minute session held weekly on Wednesday and is offered either from 5:00 – 5:25pm or 5:25 – 5:50pm. Taught by Dorothea Hines.

CanSkate Stages 1-3

CanSkate Stages 1 – 3 runs weekly on Wednesday from 5:00 – 5:50pm. This program is not sport specific. Its primary aim is to help skaters increase their confidence on the ice in preparation for future ice based sports like hockey, figure skating, and ringette. Taught By Taylor Lane.

Advanced CanSkate Stages 4-6

Advanced Canskate Stages 4 – 7 runs weekly on Wednesday from 6:00 – 6:50pm and a second optional date on Friday from 5:00 – 5:50pm. Advanced CanSkate is offered to those energetic and enthusiastic skaters who would like to continue skating as a figure skater. Our Advanced CanSkaters skate a solo to music and have the option to attend one or two competitions with the Club during the year. These solos are put together by our professional coaches. All Advanced CanSkate sessions include coaching in the registration price. Taught by Shelley Storace (Fridays) and Melissa Davidson (Armstrong) (Wednesdays)

STARskate

Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STARskate is all about! STARskate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate, and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner that includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. Skaters who have mastered figure skating skills in STARskate may also choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating. Our Starskate session runs on Tuesday from 5:00 – 6:50pm, Wednesday from 5:00 – 6:50pm (both on-ice and off-ice sessions), and Friday from 6:00 – 7:50pm. All STARskate session include group lessons in the registration price and private lessons for an additional cost. Taught by Shelley Storace and Melissa Davidson (Armstrong).

Off-ice Training

The purpose of off-ice training is to supplement a skater’s on-ice practice. This once a week session aims to help skaters develop the strength, flexibility, and balance needed for all figure skating elements. Our Off-ice Training Session is divided into three sections: strength, flexibility, and balance. The duration of each section will change to meet the needs of skaters in a given week and will be taught with an overall focus on body awareness, control, and on-ice injury prevention. Our Off-ice Training Session runs on Wednesday from 6:00-6:50pm in the upstairs hall of the Millbrook Arena. It is included in the STARskate Wednesday registration cost. Taught by Dorothea Hines.
