Meat Your Maker Market July 24

It’s Meat Your Maker day at the next Millbrook Farmers’ Market on Sunday, July 24th. At our July market, we tip our hat and celebrate our dedicated local meat producers for their significant contribution to our community.

We now have vendors at our market offering a full selection of locally harvested and produced meats, including beef, chicken, lamb, pork and rabbit, as well as an assortment of cured and prepared meats. The market’s local meat farmers include French’s Beef, Puddleduck Farm and Shealand Farms.

French’s Beef specialize in beef without growth hormones. They also grow their own feed. Puddleduck Farm, in addition to its other offerings, sells fresh frozen chicken raised on organic feed.   Their birds roam free within a large fenced area during the day. Shealand Farms sell fresh frozen lamb, pork and rabbit that are handled by a local butcher and available in many different cuts.

The silver deli truck at the Millbrook Farmers’ Market is Domenic’s Meats. They carry thick unsliced Canadian back bacon and a wide variety of Italian and German smoked meats and dried meats – prosciutto, salami, pepperonis and sausages. Though not usually considered a meat by most, we also salute Hunky Dory Smoked Fish, another market regular.

We also have a number of prepared food vendors selling meat products. Kawartha Country BBQ & Catering specialize in southern style barbeque with slow cooked beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, pork back ribs and sausages. Rollies offer various meat (and veggie) spring rolls and C’est Chaud has meat (and veggie) based pizzas.

If meat is not your cup of tea, do not despair. We have several vendors offering vegetables, vegetarian and vegan fare. Fresh greens – lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, garlic scapes – are now available, as are a variety of vegetarian/vegan wraps, stews, dips, hummus, pestos, salads and savoury pastries, not to mention baked goods.

Musical entertainment at the market this month is by Douglas MacKenzie. Douglas is a self taught guitarist and vocalist living in Millbrook. He covers the best of folk, folk-rock and pop from the 60’s to today. Didi Calhoun, of Calhoun’s Foodland, is generously sponsoring Douglas’ performance.

The children’s StoryTree reading, hosted by the Old Millbrook School Family Centre, will feature a drumming story and hands-on drumming with Anita Huntley. There will be lots of percussion instruments on hand for children to join in. Bring the kids and meet under the tree at 11:00am.

The Millbrook Public Library’s book sale will run again during market hours – great reads at great prices. Donations are also welcomed.

Come Meat Your Maker on Sunday July 24th. Sample some local meats. Pick up some free meat recipes. Learn about some interesting wine/meat pairings. The market runs from 10:00am to 1:30pm in the parking lot of the Old Millbrook School, 1 Dufferin Street, rain or shine. For more information, visit our website at millbrookfarmersmarket.weebly.com.
