Majestic Designer owner in the
showroom.
Majestic Designers moved into the location beside Woodward’s Garage almost two and a half years ago.
It’s owner, Gnanathasan Suntharampillai –known as Thas, had been building kitchens and vanities for large retailers out of a rented location in Whitby for 25 years when he decided to change direction. With his son joining the business, he was eager to find an alternative to the high volume, low margin business model in which he operated. He was looking to acquire more control over his business where he was not dependent on big box retailers.
Finding a new rental space in the Whit by area proved challenging. Prospective landlords turned him away when they learned about his business, as countertop creation is a messy and requires a lot of water. His real estate broker suggested he look further afield and take control of his premises by buying a location, which brought him to Millbrook.
The unassuming storefront at 29 King St. East disguises a showroom and manufacturing area in the rear of the building. The business employs a staff of seven.
Since his move, Thas has established relationships with several local builders who are happy to leave the cabinetry, closets and library details to him. He also does custom work for retail customers. They arrive with their design ideas and work with his designer to create a model of the space which is projected onto a large tv screen to help customers visualize the room. The virtual tour provides perspective and helps them see the impact of their design and finish choices before the project details are finalized. All cabinet and countertop work is done on site. The process from design consultation, finished project drawings, build and install takes between three and four weeks.
These days customers are gravitating to simple, stream-lined cabinets and designs, such as Shaker style cabinet doors and simple pull handles. Cabinets are available in wood, painted MDF or sleek, shiny laminate fronts. The display room above the office provides a variety of countertop and cabinet style options, including bathroom vanities with built-in lighting, vented kitchen cabinet doors and extensive use of quartz in oven hoods and walls for tv mounts.
