Twenty photographs from Cavan resident Tim Young’s Minimal Architecture series are the subject of a new Art Exhibition at St. Marys Station Gallery until May 7th.

While he has spent that last 35 years living in a rather rural setting in Cavan, his current work honours modern, urban architecture and challenges the view that it is featureless and boring.

This unique exhibition, entitled “The Minimalist Eye”, will feature architectural photos which highlight the colours and shapes of detailed sections of buildings.   His compositions focus on small sections of buildings, and his expert use colour, light and shadow transform images of what might normally be considered mundane architectural features into crisp and dramatic pieces of art.

The gallery that is hosting the event is not exactly around the corner: it is located in southwestern Ontario between Kitchener and London.  Tim came across the gallery while visiting family in the area and after an interesting conversation with curator, Tim was invited to send in a sample of his work.  This led to an invitation to be featured in the exhibit that opened last weekend.  The curator, Cameron Porteous has an eye for art developed through an extensive design career.  For almost 20 years was Head of Design for the Shaw Festival. Since 2016 he has brought his knowledge of staging to the gallery where he supports local and not-so-local artists like Tim Young.

Entitled, “Shadow Beige”, this photograph inspired a dark poem of isolation as the poet imagined a woman trapped behind the black window.

The exhibit is not just about photographic art: it incorporates local poems inspired by the photographs. Porteous shared Tim Young’s photographs with the Poetry Circle of St. Marys who have used them as inspiration for original poems.  Each photograph is accompanied by an original poem that interprets the evocative images and provide insight, connection and feelings the images inspire in the poets.  A story emerges in the poems, as art inspires art. The entire exhibit has been documented in a book which is available at the gallery.

Born in the US, Tim located to Ontario with his family as a teenager but returned to serve in the U.S. Air Force when he picked up a camera while serving on tour in South Korea.  His camera has since accompanied him on trips throughout Europe, North America, Turkey, Dominican Republic and Haiti.  His current work focuses on abstract and minimalist photos which focus on the architectural beauty which is often overlooked in the urban environment.

Tim’s photographs have been exhibited in two SPARK Juried exhibitions in Peterborough, a juried fine art exhibit in Athens, Greece, and he was a finalist in the 2018 Fusion Art competition in Palm Springs.
