Local Explorers’ Group Try Their Hands at Fencing

Last week the local explorer group tried a new sport with some pretty unusual equipment. They met with two instructors at the Peterborough Fencing Club who were happy to demonstrate their skills to this group of eager participants who were looking to expand their horizons by trying new things. Explorers have always participated in sports that are slightly off the beaten track, including archery and all forms of camping, but this was something very new and but at the same time, a sport with much history.

The Explorers met at the Peterborough Fencing Club for two hours where the instructors started them out with stretches and warm up moves and then introduced them ed to basics of fencing and how to hold the foil (sword).   After donning the protective equipment including gloves and a mask, the Explorers were put through some practice trials.

The activities progressed with the boys breaking off into pairs to practise their moves in an activity resembling a form of tag, which they all really enjoyed. The competitive spirit was taken up a notch in the final game of the evening where there were no holds barred as everyone tagged each other with the winner being the last person standing who had not been tagged by a competitor.

While the evening provided a great workout for all participants, it did so by exposing the Explorers to another world of athletics. It was such a success, the club is already discussing a return engagement, as in the words of Explorer Cameron Macdonald, “It was an awesome night”.
